The One-Year Program Meets In-Person At CMPSnnThe One-Year Program in Modern Psychoanalysis offers a solid foundation in modern psychoanalytic theory and technique.  The four component courses are designed to be useful to practitioners and non-practitioners alike.  An introduction to psychological development, both healthy and distorted, imparts an understanding of the rationale for psychoanalytic treatment.  Key aspects of the treatment process, including transference, resistance, countertransference, and analytic listening, are studied from the perspectives of patient and practitioner.  Participants gain a sense of themselves as therapeutic agents and begin to develop skills applicable in both clinical and other life situations.  Classes are taught in a supportive, discussion-oriented format.  Continuing education credits are offered to psychoanalysts, psychologists, and social workers.nnCLASSES MEET FOR 10 MONDAYS AT CMPS from 5:30 - 8:40 PM (two 90-minute classes and a 10-minute break). nnParticipants are invited to CMPS events where they can meet certificate program students and faculty members for an informal exchange of ideas.

Distance Learning Two-Year Program Edit

The CMPS Distance Learning (DL) TWO-YEAR-PROGRAM (TYP) offers instruction in modern psychoanalytic theory to licensed mental health professionals, and professionals from other backgrounds outside the greater New York City area. Courses cover key modern analytic concepts, utilizing case presentations to illustrate how theory informs clinical technique.nThis program consists of four courses:nn- Maturationn- Transference and Resistancen- Countertransferencen- Analytic Listening.nClasses are 10 weeks in length, and meet for 90 minutes.  Class readings are sent to registered students via a Dropbox link at no additional cost.nnTwo courses are offered each semester.  Whether to take one or two courses at a time, and the order in which they are taken, is up to the student.  Students are not required to take all four courses.  nEach of the four semester-long courses provides 15 New York State Education Department-approved CE credits to psychoanalysts, psychologists, and social workers who complete the course.  To receive CE credits, attendance at all classes and turning in weekly logs are required.nAll DL classes are conducted via Zoom.  Most classes consist of students in various locations, but it is also possible, if a student has a group of people who are interested in meeting together, to arrange a class in which all participants Zoom in from the same location.nnIf a student successfully completes the program's four courses and desires further study, additional courses can be arranged.nnThe Distance Learning Program is part of the CMPS Continuing Education department and does not provide credit toward psychoanalytic certification or licensure.

The Center's program in psychoanalysis has three training levels: Matriculation, which includes pre-clinical coursework, Certificate Candidacy, which entails a clinical internship at the Center's Referral Service, and Research Candidacy, which involves supervised research of a control case. Advancement to the second level is made by written application in conjunction with advisement when formal requirements are met at the preceding level. nnStudents advance to the third level when they have made a successful oral presentation of their Consultation and Referral Service cases before the Faculty Council.nnMatriculationnStudents admitted to the Center's program who are fulfilling the training analysis requirements may register for a full or part-time program. (In the first semester a full-time student would choose one course from each of the first four categories listed below. In the second semester supervision is added. The Research sequence begins in the second year.)nnHuman Development: Maturational ProcessnPsychoanalytic TheorynPsychoanalytic HistorynClinical StudiesnResearchnnClinical SupervisionnWhen accepted for matriculation, students register for core courses in the fundamentals of psychoanalysis. These courses introduce the student to the history and scientific background of psychoanalysis; the development of its language; drive theory and its relation to object relations theory; developmental theory; and revisions to Freudian theory developed between 1895 and the present. Courses in human sciences and research introduce the student to other approaches to human motivation.nnCertificate CandidacynAdmission to certificate candidacy requires completion of all courses comprising the first two years of the program.nnAfter a minimum of four semesters of approved training analysis, which may include group analytic sessions, successful completion of the Level I coursework, a student in good standing is eligible to apply for certificate candidacy.nnClinical Studies Internship: Referral ServicenStudents approved for certificate candidacy are eligible to begin supervised clinical training at the CMPS Referral Service in conjunction with relevant course work. The Case Management Clinical Practicum (PT 2610) is a forum for the discussion of issues arising particularly in the early phases of doing treatment at the Referral Service. An advanced Case Management Clinical Practicum (PT 2611) is for candidates who have mastered the relationship destructive resistances.
